I can’t be the only one that’s searched “pomegranate how to eat” on Google before. Unless they’re already prepped, they’re a tricky fruit to work with! Luckily, one of my best friends is Persian, where pomegranates are very popular, and she taught me everything I need to know about understanding the benefits of pomegranate nutrition, how to open a pomegranate, and more.

In today’s blog I’ll be covering everything you need to know about pomegranate nutrition, how to use pomegranate juice (and if it’s healthy or not!), and some of my favorite ways to incorporate pomegranate into your diet!

What Is Pomegranate?

Pomegranate is a flowering fruit that has an iconic bright red hue, and is packed with bursting, edible seeds. Pomegranates are native to Iran and India, and are cultivated and enjoyed by people all around the world. Pomegranates are enjoyed via their crunchy seeds, as well as in pomegranate juice form. Many cultures even associate pomegranates with good fortune, and feelings of abundance!

What Are The Health Benefits Of Pomegranate?

Aside from being absolutely delicious, pomegranates have a long list of healthy features! From internal to external health benefits, pomegranates are going to be your new favorite fit food!

  • Protein
      • Pomegranates contain much more protein than most fruit! In one average size pomegranate, you can enjoy around 4 grams of protein, whereas a medium-sized apple contains less than one gram of protein. Protein is an important part of a healthy diet, and can help to curb cravings, increase satiety, and promote healthy weight loss.
  • Antioxidants
      • Antioxidants are an incredible compound that our body (and mind!) thrives on. Pomegranates are a great source of antioxidants, and can help with a variety of health concerns. Antioxidants help reduce certain cardiovascular diseases [1], may help prevent cancer [2], and help fight off free radicals that can speed up aging.
  • Skin healthy
      • The beauty of pomegranates is a little hint at their own beauty benefits! The vitamins and minerals found in pomegranates can help to gently detoxify the body and support the digestive system. These body systems are a few ways that we get rid of waste in the body. When we’re properly removing toxins, we’re less likely to break out! [3]
  • Anti-inflammatory
      • The anti-inflammatory effects of pomegranate contribute to its overall health benefits. Reducing inflammation in the body is the best way to combat chronic diseases. From reducing bloat and redness, to reducing joint pain, keeping inflammation at bay is important for people of all ages. [4]
  • Brain health
    • A specific type of polyphenol found in pomegranate contributes to its neuroprotective properties, meaning pomegranate has a positive effect on brain health! Several studies even show this particular attribute of pomegranate to be connected to reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. [5, 6]

How To Use Pomegranate

There are some amazing ways to get pomegranate into your diet, but I definitely have a top three favorite list!

The first is of course to eat pomegranate seeds whole! They’re delicious, crunchy, and so versatile! They can be added atop smoothie bowls, sprinkled over yogurt, or mixed into salads.

Second, you can drink pomegranate juice! There are some great grocery store options, but they tend to be high in sugar. Make sure if you choose to drink pomegranate juice it contains just pomegranates and water! You can drink it straight or add it into smoothies, splash it in sparkling water, or incorporate into sauces.

The last and, in my opinion, best way to consume pomegranate is from Beauty Juice. It’s a tasty, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory superfood powder that contains all of the essential daily nutrients your body needs and craves. It’s simple, easy to take on the go, and is so delicious (thanks to the combination of fruits, including pomegranate!), that you’re going to love making it a part of your daily routine.
