If You Couldn’t Taste Anything, Would It Be Easier To Lose Weight?

It’s no secret that the easiest way to create discipline in your life is to remind yourself of “mind over matter”. Our mind can very easily trick us into watching TV instead of working out, or snoozing your alarm instead of waking up early. This can be a difficult thing to keep in mind when we’re craving something delicious. It’s not our mind that wants the chocolate, our taste buds do! Or is it?

In today’s blog I’m going to discuss what part taste plays in the weight loss journey, if any, and how to incorporate some “mind over matter” weight loss tips to your cravings to keep your goals within reach.

Does Taste Affect Weight Loss?

This question has a few parts to it, so I’m going to answer it in sections. The short answer is yes, taste absolutely affects weight loss. The long answer gets into why.

When we eat sugar regularly, or oily foods, our body becomes accustomed to it, and our taste buds become less sensitive to other flavors like bitter and sour. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), our palates should be experiencing all six tastes on a regular basis. They are sweet, bitter, sour, astringent, salty, and pungent. Most people are only consuming sweet and salty foods, which is why so many weight loss diets seem unappealing at first. It’s not that they’re necessarily bad, your taste buds just aren’t used to them! So how do we alter our palate to incorporate these six tastes, and ultimately, enjoy weight loss diets without the cringe factor? With my top three ways to trick the mind for weight loss, below.

Taste and food

Tricking The Mind For Weight Loss

With these three weight loss tips, you’ll be able to incorporate more food varieties, and you’ll get a brief introduction to the six TCM tastes. These will not only expand your palate, but also make you more sensitive to tastes like sugar and salt, and help you crave them less.

Tip 1: SkinnyFit Detox Tea

  • The SkinnyFit Detox tea contains both sweet and bitter ingredients like hibiscus, milk thistle, dandelion, lemongrass, and goji berry. Don’t worry, bitter doesn’t mean harsh. For example, as gentle as milk thistle is, it’s considered a bitter herb. This tea in particular will help curb cravings all on its own!

Tip 2: Celery and lemon juice

  • Combining celery and lemon will cover the sour and salty tastes. Adding a pinch of salt to your juice will help even more. Becoming more accustomed to these flavor profiles will help reduce cravings, and can even help you enjoy vegetables more!

Tip 3: Bone or Vegetarian Broth

  • Sipping on a warm broth that contains ingredients like cilantro and onion will help cover the remaining two tastes–astringent and pungent. You can also make a tea with these flavors, but you may have to work up to it.
