Onion rings have always been one of my favorite tasty, flavorful snacks or meal sides ever since I was a kid. As deliciously greasy as they are, we all probably know that they’re typically high in calories and fat, making them a pretty unhealthy go-to. However, with a few simple tweaks, I’ve learned to enjoy them without feeling guilty. Talk about a game changer! I can’t wait to share my favorite healthy onion rings recipe that’s low in calories, packed with flavor, and the perfect choice for summer barbecues all season!

Onion Rings Made Healthy?
Onions are a great source of antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation and prevent chronic diseases. They are also low in calories and high in fiber, making them a great addition to any diet. By using whole-grain breadcrumbs and nonfat yogurt, this recipe is also a good source of whole grains and protein. Not to mention, the secret skin-boosting ingredient (shout out Super Youth!) adds even more to the health factor. It’s perfect for summer barbecues because it’s just a classic crowd-pleaser. Plus, it is easy to make and can be prepared ahead of time, so you can spend more time with your guests.

Low-Calorie Onion Rings
Ingredients
- 2 scoops SY Unflavored
- Large yellow onion sliced into ¼-inch slices
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup plain nonfat yogurt
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Steps
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
- Prepare 3 shallow bowls. Add flour to the first bowl, mixed Super Youth & yogurt to the second, and breadcrumbs to the third.
- Dunk the onion slices in flour, shaking off any excess. Dip them into the Super Youth yogurt mixture, then press them into the breadcrumbs, coating them evenly. Place each breaded onion slice onto the prepared baking sheet as you work through the batch.
- Sprinkle with salt, then bake until onions are tender-crisp (about 15-20 minutes).
- Set the oven to broil & continue cooking until the breading is golden and crispy (about 2-3 more minutes).
