If you immediately perk up at the mention of dessert but feel like you have to choose between your health goals and your cravings, this recipe is for you! It’s a delicious, satisfying, and healthier take on caramelized bananas. One that won’t make you feel guilty, isn’t overloaded with sugar, and won’t compromise your health goals.

I’m a big believer in balance, and the best way to avoid yo-yo dieting isn’t to cut out the things you love but to find a way to make them better for you. Today’s recipe for grilled bananas is one of my go-to desserts. It’s sweet enough to satisfy your sweet tooth but low enough on the sugar totem pole to avoid the unwanted crashing and continued cravings!

Making caramelized bananas healthy isn’t impossible, and today’s recipe is proof you can health-ify just about anything!

Can You Make Grilled Bananas Foster Healthy?

Grilled bananas are a classic dessert that seems healthy because of its main ingredient (bananas!), but most caramelized bananas are chock full of sugar. This recipe, on the other hand, includes protein-packed collagen and fiber-rich coconut sugar. Who says healthy swaps have to be boring? This is the one of the few desserts that will earn you bragging rights with your health and fitness-loving friends!

You can use Super Youth Chocolate Cake collagen or Super Youth Unflavored collagen in this recipe. (As a chocoholic, I vote for Chocolate Cake!) Just one scoop of Super Youth contains 7 grams of protein, and endless beauty benefits such as reduced fine lines and cellulite, and gorgeous youthful skin [1]. Who knew learning how to caramelize bananas could be a form of self-care?!

One of the biggest differences between traditional bananas foster and this healthy caramelized bananas recipe is the calorie count. Your typical grilled bananas recipe can contain more than 600 calories [2] (sometimes double!), whereas this one is nearly half of that. In my book, that’s a steal for a decadent dessert! This version is just as satisfying, and won’t leave you feeling stuffed, guilty, or like you need to run an extra mile tomorrow.

If you’re not sure how to caramelize bananas, prepare to be amazed. Before I knew how to caramelize bananas I thought it required some expert baking equipment or kitchen skills. It’s actually as simple as setting the oven to “broil”. While your bananas are caramelizing, simply mix your collagen of choice into mascarpone cheese to make a delicious, healthy topping. Add any additional fixins’ such as chocolate sauce and walnuts, and enjoy!

Healthy Caramelized Bananas

This caramelized banana recipe is a healthy version of bananas foster and will be your new go-to treat whenever you have a sweet tooth!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Serving Size: 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe bananas
  • 1 tbsp brown coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon or nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp mascarpone cheese
  • 1 scoop Super Youth Chocolate Cake collagen
  • 1 tbsp walnuts
  • Drizzle of chocolate sauce (optional)

Steps

  1. Using a knife, carefully slice the bananas down the center lengthwise with the peel on (do not peel the banana first). Cut along the curve of the banana so they lay flat on a baking sheet.
  2. Set your oven or toaster oven to broil. Sprinkle the inside of the bananas with the brown coconut sugar and spices. Broil for 4-5 minutes keeping a close eye making sure they don’t burn.
  3. While these are cooking, add one scoop of Super Youth Chocolate Cake collagen to the mascarpone cheese and mix well.
  4. Once the bananas are caramelized, drizzle with chocolate sauce (optional), walnuts, and add the chocolate mascarpone cheese. Enjoy hot.
